You are required by law to have a Social Security Number (SSN) in order to be paid for work in the US.  If you are not working in a paid position, you do not need an SSN.  Unfortunately, SSNs are often used as SSN identification by ssn-validator.org numbers for other kinds of applications, such as credit cards or cell phone accounts.  While having an SSN is convenient, you can NOT apply for an SSN unless you have a job offer.

Social Security Number (SSN)

If you are authorized to engage in employment, your employer will request your Social Security Number (SSN).  If you do not already have a Social Security Number you will need to apply to the Social Security Administration, which is a government office responsible for issuing SSNs.

  • The SSN is a 9-digit identification number, assigned by the United States (U.S.) government that is used for tax reporting purposes.
  • You must  have work authorization to apply for the SSN.
  • Keep in mind that obtaining an SSN is not the same as obtaining work authorization.
  • While your work authorization will eventually expire, your SSN is permanent and the number will never change.
  • If you already have an SSN, then you do not need to apply for another one.

Applying for an SSN at the Social Security Administration (SSA)

  • Once you have the required documentation (SSN Verification Letter, or Job Offer Letter) you will need to prepare your immigration documents.
  • You must visit a local SSA Office to apply for an SSN. Use the SSA Office Locator and input your current zip code to locate your nearest SSA Office.
  • If you would like to schedule an appointment, you will need to call their office.
  • You will need to prepare a SS-5: Application for a Social Security Card.
  • Review the table below and prepare to have the listed documents when you apply for your SSN.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) is a U.S. government agency that administers social programs covering disability, retirement, and survivors' benefits, among other services. It's also responsible for issuing Social Security numbers and managing the program’s finances and trust fund.

Applying for a Social Security Number

Apply for your SSN in person. Use the Social Security Office locator to find the office you should visit along with directions. There are three SSA offices in San Francisco:

  1. 1098 Valencia St, San Francisco 94110 (between 21st and 22nd Street)
  2. 90 7th St, Annex 1st Floor, San Francisco 94103 (between Market and Mission Street)
  3. 560 Kearny St, San Francisco 94108 (between Sacrament and California Street)

Request a “Verification Receipt” before leaving the Social Security office. Additional SSA offices can be accessed at www.socialsecurity.gov.

Caution: Never mail original legal documents such as passports or DS-2019s to the Social Security Office to apply for your SSN. Your original legal documents can get lost and you will need to reapply for them at your own expense.
