On August 1, 2022, all Covid-19 travel limitations for visitors to France are abolished. This indicates that the guidelines that previously applied to visitors arriving in France are no longer valid.

There will no longer be any paperwork or immunization documentation requirements for visitors entering France or any of its overseas territories. Additionally, they won't have to provide documentation of a negative PCR or antigen test.

Regardless of vaccination status, all visitors to France must meet the same standards. Before departing, all travelers should familiarize themselves with France's entrance requirements. All COVID-19 travel restrictions for visitors to France have been eliminated as of August 1, 2022.

The guidelines that once applied to visitors entering France no longer hold:

You are no longer required to provide vaccination documentation, fill out any paperwork before you arrive in France, such as a sworn declaration or an explanation for your trip, and give evidence of a negative PCR or antigen test when you do.

Travel between metropolitan France and each of the French overseas territories falls under this as well. In a similar vein, leaving France does not require approval from the French government before leaving the country.

Should you be passing through France?

When travelling from one country to another, this is referred to as transiting. Travellers from the UK are allowed to transit through France as long as they comply with the aforementioned entrance conditions.

  • Before departing, double-check your passport and other travel documents.

  • Passport expiration: You’ll need a passport that is valid

a)   Valid for at least three months after the day you want to depart (check the "expiry date") and issued no more than ten years before the day you enter the country.

b)  Before departing, make sure your passport satisfies these conditions. Your passport's expiration date may have been extended by additional months if it was created before October 1, 2018.

  • You must adhere to the Schengen area passport rules if you want to visit an EU nation (other than Ireland), as well as Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, or Vatican City.

If you believe your passport does not satisfy both of these conditions, get in touch with the embassy of the nation you are going to Whenever necessary, renew your passport.

French Visa for UK Citizens

Without a visa, you are permitted to visit France for up to 90 days in any 180-day period in any of the nations that make up the Schengen region. This is true whether you are travelling for leisure, business, short-term study or training, family or friend visits, cultural or sporting events, or to attend business meetings. Find out more details here.

Make sure your whole stay is under the 90-day restriction if you are visiting France and other Schengen nations without a visa. Schengen countries visited during the 180 days before departure count against your 90 days.

If you wish to remain longer, work or study, travel for business, or for any other purpose, you must be able to enter France in accordance with French entry rules. Visit the France Visas page to find out what could be your specific entrance criteria.

You should visit the French Visas website for further details on obtaining a visa for France. You can input your unique needs to find out if you need a visa; this is also the website for applying for visas.

Read the information about visas and permissions if you are travelling to France for business.

Your 90-day visa-free period is not affected if you stay in France while in possession of a residency permit or long-stay visa.

British nationals who are unable to leave France before their visa, permit, or period of visa-free travel expires should get in touch with their regional prefecture in France.

Passport attestation

If you enter or leave the Schengen region through France as a visitor, be sure your passport has been stamped. Your compliance with the 90-day visa-free stay restriction for brief trips in the Schengen region will be verified by border guards using the stamps on your passport. Border officers will assume you have exceeded your allowed number of days without a visa if the appropriate entrance or departure stamps are missing from your passport.

You can provide proof of the date and location you entered or left the Schengen region, and you can ask the border guards to record these details in your passport. Examples of acceptable documentation include tickets and boarding cards.

It's possible that you'll need to:

  • Present evidence of your intended lodging, such as a booking confirmation or proof of residence if you are visiting your own property (eg second home). Additional details are provided below.

  • Provide evidence of your travel insurance. Please review the information on travel insurance here.

  • Prove that you have adequate money for the duration of your stay by displaying a return or onward ticket. Additional details are provided below.

France divides potential lodging options for tourists into the following categories:

  • If you are staying with friends or relatives, or with a third party, you might be required to present an "attestation d'accueil" (welcome invitation) from your host. This attestation d'accueil must be obtained by the French citizen hosting you from their local mayor's office, and they must deliver the original attestation before you enter France. Additionally, you must be ready to present evidence of sufficient finances totaling at least €32.50 every day for the duration of your stay. You should be prepared to meet the requirements of option 4 below if you do not have an "attestation d'accueil."

  • You have a second home in France; Thus, you must be able to demonstrate your ownership or tenancy of the property, as evidenced by a tax or utility bill.

  • You may be asked for proof of your reservation while entering France if you are staying in a hotel or other commercially furnished lodging. Proof of money in the amount of at least €65 per day for the duration of your stay is also required.

  • You don't have an "attestation d'accueil" or any pre-arranged lodging; in this case, you could be required to show that you have at least €120 per day available to cover your expenses throughout your visit.

Due to COVID-19 limitations, British nationals who are unable to return to the UK before their visa or permission expires or at the end of their visa-free period should get in touch with their regional immigration authority in France.
